The Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance - 13:00 - 13:30 (Room L)

Title: Research fellowships for the best and the brightest scientists

Speaker: Prof Anuradha Lohia, CEO, The Wellcome Trust-DBT India Alliance, India
The Wellcome Trust/ DBT India Alliance is a new initiative formed by the partnership of the Wellcome Trust (UK) with the Department of Biotechnology (India). Our mandate is to provide research fellowships to the brightest young scientists who wish to pursue research in life sciences in India. Fellowships are provided at various stages of a research career, post-PhD. Fellows are provided personal support and funds for research costs. At this talk we would like to introduce our schemes and advise potential applicants.

The EMBO Publications - 13:30 - 15:00 (Room B)

The editorial teams of the four EMBO publications - The EMBO Journal, EMBO Reports, Molecular Systems Biology (published jointly with NPG) and EMBO Molecular Medicine - invite you to a symposium focused on scientific publishing, the EMBO publications, and editorial policies & procedures. The first part of the session will feature presentations from the editors of all four journals and in the second part we will invite comments and questions from the audience.

The following editors will present the journals:, Sandra Caldeira for EMBO Molecular Medicine, Isabel Arnold - The EMBO Journal, Barbara Pauly - EMBO Reports and Les Grivell - Molecular Systems Biology. Howy Jacobs, Senior Editor for EMBO Reports, will also be on the panel.

The CancerPathways Project (EU FP7) - 13:30 - 15:00 (Room C-D)

Title: Drosophila as a model for human disease

Speakers: Michael Boutros, Maria Dominguez Castellano, Frank Schnorrer & Martin Zeidler

CancerPathways is a research consortium funded by the 7th Framework Program of the EU. It aims to identify novel targets in cancer relevant signaling pathways. They make use of the evolutionary conservation of oncogenic pathways with Drosophila representing a particularly powerful model system for the analysis of signaling cascades.

Michael Boutros
Title: Art & design of RNAi screening in Drosophila
Drosophila cells are versatile tools to systematically identify signalling pathway components by RNA interference. These experiments are facilitated by a low genetic redundancy and efficient target gene knockdown by long double-stranded RNAs in cultured cells. We will present current approaches and newly designed reagents for RNAi screening in Drosophila.

Maria Dominguez Castellano
Title: Drosophila-based screens for cancer-causing genes
Metastases, rather than primary tumour growth, are responsible for most cancer deaths. Currently few effective therapies exist that alleviate metastatic growth. With the aim to identify new metastasis-causing genes and mechanisms, we employ Drosophila-based genetic screens to uncover genes collaborating with the Notch pathway to promote highly invasive tumours in vivo.

Frank Schnorrer
Title: Systematic genetic analysis of muscle morphogenesis and function in Drosophila
Muscle is a complex biological machine. We apply a systematic RNAi based strategy to define the genetic basis of muscle formation and function in Drosophila.  We assign groups of genes to specific functions in the organisation of myofibrils or sarcomeres. Many of these conserved genes are implicated in human muscle diseases.

Martin Zeidler
Title: Identification of JAK/STAT effectors driving tumorigenesis - insights from Drosophila
Defective haematopoietic development caused by inappropriate activation of JAK/STAT signalling is central to a wide range of human myeloproliferative diseases. Using Drosophila as a model, we examined the transcriptome of JAK/STAT activation and identified effector target genes using an in vivo gain-of-function model and RNAi based knock down approaches.

Olympus Life Science Europa GmbH - 13:30 - 15:00 (Room E-F)

Title: The New Benchtop Confocal Fluoview FV10i

Speaker: Florian Eich

Overview: The new microscope concept combines high functionality with easy operation. High-quality optics, spectral detection module, motorized stage, antivibration platform and laser combiner are integrated into an all-in-one package. Smart software guides the user through the whole acquisition process and assures excellent images. Confocal imaging gets as easy as A-B-C.

CYTOO Cell Architects - 13:30 - 14:00 (Room N-N1)

Title: Reproducible cell analysis without changing your assay

Speaker:Alexandra Fuchs FR

Discover how adhesive micropatterns normalize cell architecture and behavior down to their internal organization. Construct a Reference Cell for your application by overlaying hundreds of labeled cells and gain in robustness and sensitivity. Adhesive micropatterns have been used successfully with stem cells, primary cells and many adherent laboratory cell lines.

Monday 31 August between 13:00 & 15:00

Eurofins MWG Operon - 14:00 - 14:30 (Room B)

Title: Next Generation Sequencing of Genomes & Transcriptomes & enhanced Protein Expression using Synthetic Genes with optimised Codon Usage

Speakers: Georg Gradl & Uwe Köhler

Overview: On our Next Generation Sequencing platform we offer whole genome sequencing and construct cDNA libraries that are optimised for this technology. Sequenced genes of interest can be expressed in heterologous hosts after gene synthesis. Our proprietary software GENius optimises the codon usage of synthetic genes for best protein expression results.

TET Systems / Clontech - 13:30 - 15:00 (Room E-F)

Title: The Tet Technology and its Impact on Modern Life Sciences

Speakers: Hermann Bujard DE, Rudolf Jaenisch US, Dean Felsher US & Luke Alphey UK

Prof. Bujard as one of the inventors will provide an overview of the Tet Technology. A group of 3 excellent speakers describes recent applications in the fields of stem cell biology, cancer disease and progression, and disease control via sterile insect technology, demonstrating the enabling power of this innovative technology.

Leica Microsystems B.V. - 13:30 - 15:00 - (Room L)

Title: Advances in Confocal Microscopy and Structured Illumination

Speakers:
André Quinkertz - Leica Structured Illumination with Angstrom™
Vanessa Lurquin - White Light Laser, STED Superresolution, Latest Advances in confocal microscopy
Constantin Kappel - Probing binding and molecular microenvironments: The wedding of spectroscopy and microscopy

Nikon Instruments Europe B.V. - 13:30 - 15:00 - (Room N-N1)

Title: Improved confocal imaging of happy and healthy cells; CLEM & VAAS

Speakers: Erik Manders (University of Amsterdam, NL), Herman Fennema (Nikon Instruments Europe) and Robert Stad (Nikon Instruments Europe).

Preventing bleaching and phototoxicity is one of the primary requirements for live cell (confocal) imaging. From the moment Nikon has entered the confocal microscopy market, it has focused on technologies that optimize the viability of cells. Controlled light excitation microscopy (CLEM) and the virtual adaptable aperture system (VAAS) are developed in close collaboration with bioscience researchers. This workshop explains technologies and targets applications.
